Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken says Guyana has recorded a 20 per cent decline in serious crimes over the past year.
Speaking during this week’s Police Round Up, Hicken said the reduction was driven by stronger collaboration between communities and the police, as well as the increased use of technology in crime prevention and detection.

According to the Top Cop, the Guyana Police Force is aiming to push that figure even higher in the coming months as additional systems are rolled out.
“Like we said, we are moving 20%, and we want it by now, and probably in the next 3 or 4 months, when we put systems in place, we have at least 25/30%,” Hicken said.
The Police Commissioner also disclosed that murders have declined by 18 per cent when compared with the same period in 2025, while armed robberies are down by 7 per cent.
Break and enter and larceny fell by 15 per cent, and rape cases dropped to 53 so far in 2026 from 87 during the corresponding period last year.
He further revealed that police have confiscated 51 unlicensed firearms across the country so far this year. Hicken urged citizens to continue working closely with the Guyana Police Force as efforts continue to make the country safer.
