A Sunday morning discovery along the Eccles-to-Ogle Bypass has left two men dead after their pickup was found overturned and submerged in a deep concrete drain at Henry Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Dead are 38-year-old Brian Sookram, of Lot 3 Crown Dam, Industry, East Coast Demerara (ECD), who was driving motor pickup GRR 5251, and 35-year-old Leon Sookdeo, of Lot 998 Diamond New Scheme, who was a passenger.
Police said the vehicle was discovered turned turtle in a concrete drain on the southern side of the roadway. The drain is estimated to be about 15 feet wide and 10 feet deep and contained water and dense vegetation.
According to investigators, the pickup was removed by a tow truck in the presence of police, and the bodies of Sookram and Sookdeo were found motionless inside.
Police said the bodies were examined at the scene, and no visible marks of violence were observed. Both men were escorted to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where they were officially pronounced dead.
Their bodies were later taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home Mortuary, where they are being stored pending post-mortem examinations.
Investigators processed the scene and the vehicle. Police said checks for CCTV footage and eyewitnesses were unsuccessful.
The pickup has been lodged at the SAGE Pond Police Outpost, where it is expected to be examined by a Licensing and Certifying Officer. Investigations are ongoing.
