Shoppers were thrown into panic Monday afternoon when two masked men in orange jumpsuits stormed a business at Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), and carried out a brazen multi-million-dollar robbery in broad daylight.

The robbery occurred at about 2:50 p.m. and targeted both the business establishment and a 43-year-old vendor from Providence, East Bank Demerara.

Investigators said the woman was at the business with her family and was paying for an item at the cashier’s cubicle when she saw the two masked suspects approach the register.

One of the men, who was armed with a handgun, reportedly pointed the weapon at the cashier and ordered her to move away from the register.

The other suspect, who was said to be unarmed, then went behind the counter and began taking cash from the drawer and placing it into a haversack, while the armed accomplice kept watch.

During the robbery, the armed suspect also relieved the 43-year-old woman of her purse and cellphone.

Further investigations revealed that after emptying the register, the two men hurried downstairs to the lower flat, where two other accomplices were waiting on the ground floor.

The four men then exited the building, mounted two black Honda XR motorcycles without number plates, and escaped north along Diamond Public Road.

The business was robbed of $4,140,000 in cash.

The vendor also lost a black purse valued at $5,000, which contained $90,000 in cash, along with her driver’s licence, identification card and bank card.

Investigations are ongoing.
