A 19-year-old man lost his life on Monday morning after the car he was driving slammed into a parked lorry along the Number 72 Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.

Dead is Nathaniel Busgith, called “Joel,” of Lot 38, Number 76 Housing Scheme, Corentyne. He was unemployed.

Information gathered indicates that Busgith was driving motor car PAP 1126 north along the southern lane of the Number 72 Public Road when he reportedly lost control of the vehicle and collided with parked motor lorry GAF 5822, which was on the western side of the roadway.

Public-spirited citizens reportedly pulled the teen from the wrecked car and rushed him to the Number 75 Regional Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Busgith’s mother, Basmattie McDonald, said her son left home at around 7:00 a.m. to run errands, but less than an hour later, she received a call from a neighbour informing her that he had been involved in an accident.

She said that when she arrived at the hospital, she met a teacher who claimed to have seen the crash. According to the woman, a vehicle bearing a trade plate reportedly turned suddenly into Nathaniel’s path, causing him to swerve in an effort to avoid it before crashing into the truck.

Still in shock over the loss, the grieving mother said she is struggling to come to terms with her son’s death.

Police have since launched an investigation into the fatal crash.
