READ BELOW THE STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE GUYANA POLICE FORCE (GPF):

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has noted with concern the recent recirculation on social media of several old videos depicting interactions and altercations involving Police ranks and members of the public.

The manner in which some of these videos are being reposted, in some instances without their original dates or context, may give viewers the impression that the incidents occurred recently, when in fact some took place months or years ago.

The GPF wishes to make it clear that several of the matters currently being recirculated were previously brought to the attention of the Force, investigated, including by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) where applicable and the appropriate action was taken based on the circumstances and findings of those investigations.

The Force therefore urges social media users, particularly persons who operate pages and other online platforms, to exercise greater care and responsibility when sharing or reposting old material. Persons are encouraged to verify the date, circumstances and context of videos before presenting them as current incidents.

While the Guyana Police Force respects the public’s right to record, share information and raise legitimate concerns about the conduct of Police ranks, the recirculation of old material without appropriate context can create unnecessary public concern and contribute to the spread of misleading information.

The GPF remains committed to transparency and accountability and will continue to investigate complaints of misconduct involving its ranks and take appropriate action where warranted.

The Guyana Police Force encourages members of the public to use social media responsibly and to ensure that information being shared is presented accurately and in its proper context.
