A 27-year-old man from Chesney, Corentyne, Berbice, has been arrested as police investigate alleged remarks about making explosives during a protest outside the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the man was arrested on Tuesday, following the circulation of a social media video recorded during the protest connected to Azruddin Mohamed’s extradition hearing.
According to police, an individual in the recording allegedly made statements about making explosives commonly referred to as “Channa bombs”.
The Force said the video also captured individuals throwing missiles at police ranks, while a male voice could be heard saying, “Burn the place.”
Investigators said the footage came from a Facebook Live broadcast on an account bearing the name “FS Khan”.
During questioning, the suspect acknowledged attending the protest and conducting the livestream, police said. He reportedly told investigators that several people around him were making threatening remarks towards police officers.
Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the statements and possible offences involving threats of violence and incitement.
