A Berbice headmistress has died after she was struck by a car in a hit-and-run accident along the Rose Hall Town Public Road on Monday afternoon.
Dead is Sonia Williams, 51, a resident of Chesney Housing Scheme and Graduate Headmistress of Kildonan Primary School.
Police said the fatal accident occurred at about 15:21hrs. According to initial inquiries, Williams’ motor car, PAK 5566, was stationary on the southern side of the road when she reportedly attempted to open the right-side front door.
At that time, a white motor car travelling west allegedly collided with Williams and the opened door before the driver continued away from the scene.
Williams fell onto the roadway and sustained injuries to her body. She was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital and was later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where she succumbed while receiving treatment.
Her body is at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police later identified the driver as a resident of Hampshire, Corentyne, Berbice, and the vehicle involved as motor car PJJ 7624.
The driver and motor car are now in police custody as investigators continue their probe into the fatal crash.
