A 64-year-old farmer was robbed of $12 million Wednesday night after two armed men stormed his home at Uitkomst, Canal No. 1, West Bank Demerara (WBD), and forced occupants onto the floor while they searched for valuables.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the robbery occurred at about 8:15 p.m. Preliminary investigations revealed that the farmer was sitting under a shed on the lower flat of his residence with relatives when the two suspects entered the yard.
Police said both men were armed with what appeared to be handguns. The bandits then ordered the occupants into the kitchen area and forced them to lie on the floor while demanding valuables.
During the robbery, the farmer was reportedly assaulted and later taken to a white bucket inside the house where cash was being kept. The suspects allegedly removed $12 million in Guyana currency from the bucket, along with four cellular phones valued at a total of $400,000.
They then escaped in a silver-tinted Toyota Axio motor car, registration number unknown, heading west. Police said no serious injuries were reported and no shots were fired during the ordeal.
Several people have since been questioned, and CCTV footage in the area is expected to be reviewed as part of the investigation. The suspects are still being sought as investigations continue.
