Police are investigating the fatal stabbing of a 48-year-old man following a confrontation at Nigg Village, Corentyne, Berbice, on Friday afternoon.
Dead is Carter Baboolall, called “Fat Boy,” who lived alone in the village.
According to reports, the incident occurred at about 5:40 p.m. when Baboolall and 18-year-old Dave Latchminarine became involved in an argument that quickly turned physical.
During the altercation, Latchminarine allegedly armed himself with a knife and stabbed Baboolall several times on the left side of his body before fleeing.
Investigators said the suspect ran north, crossed the Nigg Public Road and escaped.
Baboolall was rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.
Police said they carried out searches for the suspect, but he has not yet been found.
Speaking with reporters, Latchminarine’s mother, Khemrajee Ramcharran, said the last time she saw her son was on Monday and that she received a call about the incident shortly after 6 p.m. Friday.
She said she immediately went to the scene after hearing the news.
Ramcharran said persons at a nearby car wash told her that her son had gone there to pump a bicycle wheel when Baboolall rode past him, turned back and allegedly cuffed him three times in the face.
She also claimed that a police officer who was at the car wash washing his vehicle tried to run after her son after he fled, but was unable to catch him.
According to Ramcharran, her son escaped barefoot, leaving his slippers behind, and the family has since been unable to determine where he is.
“Me nah even know if dead or alive or where he deh. Me promise the Police officers them as soon as me find he or hear where he deh, me go carry he to the station,” she said.
Investigations are continuing.
