GDF rank injured after patrol comes under fire from Venezuelan shore

A member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was injured on Thursday after a patrol came under fire during a border security operation along the Cuyuni River in Region Seven.

In a statement issued on Friday, the GDF said the incident occurred at about 12:03 hrs while a patrol was escorting civilian commuters in keeping with established operational procedures.

According to the Force, the patrol came under hostile fire from the Venezuelan shore. The GDF said its ranks responded in line with operational protocols and were able to ensure the safe passage of all civilians despite the attack.

One soldier sustained injuries during the exchange and was immediately given first aid before being medically evacuated to Georgetown for further treatment.

The injured rank is reportedly in stable condition, and family members have been informed.

The Defence Force said it continues to maintain an active operational presence along the western border and remains committed to protecting its personnel, securing border communities and safeguarding Guyana’s territorial integrity.

The incident comes amid continued tensions along Guyana’s border with Venezuela.
