Police have arrested three suspects as investigations continue into the murder of 69-year-old Mohammed Shaheed, called “Fizal” or “Artist,” whose body was discovered in a decomposed state at his Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) home.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the alleged murder occurred sometime between 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, and 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, at Parker Street, Providence.
Shaheed, a self-employed resident of the area, was reportedly last seen alive on May 16. Police said checks were made on him after calls to his phone went unanswered, and he was later found motionless inside his house.
Investigators processed the scene and found the body in an advanced state of decomposition. Police said there were no signs of forced entry at the premises.
The body was taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where a doctor pronounced Shaheed dead. It was later transferred to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.
A post-mortem examination conducted on May 20 by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh gave the cause of death as brain haemorrhage due to multiple blunt trauma to the head.
Police said that through intelligence gathering, investigative work, and the use of technology, several persons of interest were identified.
As a result, a 19-year-old construction worker of Parker Street, Providence, and a 22-year-old porter of Back Street, Peter’s Hall, were arrested on Monday, May 25.
Further investigations led to the arrest of a 17-year-old labourer of Parker Street, Providence, on Tuesday, May 26. Police said he is being treated as a juvenile and the matter is being handled in accordance with the Juvenile Justice Act.
All three suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
