Fisherman found dead in boat after rushing to check vessel taking in water

Police are investigating the death of a 55-year-old fisherman who was found motionless inside his boat at the 40 Feet Koker Dam, Unity Village, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, on Monday afternoon.

Dead is Stephen Ragbeer, also known as “Cannon,” of Lancaster, Unity Village, Mahaica.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the incident occurred sometime between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Initial investigations revealed that Ragbeer owned a fishing boat which he usually docked at the 40 Feet Koker Dam after returning from his daily fishing trips.

Police said that on the day in question, Ragbeer was reportedly told that his boat was taking in water and left to check on the vessel.

At about 4:00 p.m., a report was made to the Mahaica Police Station that a man was seen lying motionless in a boat at the location. Ranks responded and found Ragbeer’s body inside the boat.

He was taken to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival. Police said the body was examined and no visible marks of violence were found.

It was later taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
