A 33-year-old barber was shot in his left foot after surrendering his jewellery to a gunman during a robbery at his Albouystown barbershop on Friday night, police said.
The man, who lives at Prospect, East Bank Demerara (EBD), is receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital. His condition is listed as stable.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the robbery occurred around 8:55 p.m. at Callender Street and Independence Boulevard.
The barber was seated inside his shop with two other persons when two masked men dressed in dark clothing arrived on a black XR motorcycle.
Police said the pillion rider got off the motorcycle, entered the shop and pointed a handgun at the barber while demanding his valuables.
The barber handed over a gold chain and a gold and diamond ring. The gunman then allegedly fired a shot in his direction, striking him in his left foot.
The suspect returned to the waiting motorcycle and escaped with his accomplice.
Persons in the area assisted the injured barber and took him to hospital.
Investigators recovered a .380 spent shell at the scene. Police also identified CCTV cameras nearby and said footage would be reviewed as part of the investigation.
Investigations are continuing.
