A LIAT flight bound for Antigua was forced to return to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on Sunday after the pilot reported an engine-related issue shortly after departure.
According to a statement from CJIA, LIAT Flight 5L770 departed the airport at approximately 11:55 a.m. for Antigua. At about 12:25 p.m., the pilot informed the airport’s Control Tower that the aircraft would be returning to CJIA because of an engine-related problem.
Airport authorities immediately alerted relevant emergency services, including the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), which were placed on standby ahead of the aircraft’s return.
The plane subsequently landed safely at CJIA. All 47 passengers on board disembarked without incident, the airport said.
The aircraft remains at CJIA while LIAT’s technical team carries out assessments to determine the nature of the problem and undertake the necessary repairs.
The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and CJIA said they are working closely with LIAT as the matter is being addressed. No injuries were reported.
