The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission has shut down six illegal mining operations in the Mazaruni Mining District, Region Seven, as authorities intensify efforts to clamp down on unlawful activity in the sector.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Ministry of Natural Resources said the enforcement exercise was carried out through the GGMC, with support from the Guyana Police Force, after reports surfaced of illegal mining taking place in the area.

According to the ministry, the six illegal operations were being run within a quarry area. The joint operation, executed by the GGMC Corps of Wardens and police ranks, resulted in the arrest of 38 persons.

Authorities also seized several pieces of equipment and machinery that were allegedly being used to facilitate the unlawful mining activities.

The ministry said surveillance measures have since been put in place in the area to monitor activity and prevent a return of the illegal operations.

It further warned that illegal mining will not be tolerated, stressing that the government remains committed to a zero-tolerance approach against unlawful activity in the mining sector.

The ministry said authorities will continue to move decisively to detect, disrupt and prosecute those involved in illegal mining.
