Miner killed after bar fight at Issano, suspect on the run

A miner was killed during an early-morning altercation at a bar in the Middle Mazaruni, and police are now searching several mining camps for the suspect.

Dead is Shawn Abrams, a miner of Charity, Essequibo Coast. Police said the murder occurred at about 00:45hrs on Saturday, at 14 Miles, Issano, Middle Mazaruni River.

The suspect has been identified only as a 31-year-old miner from Canje, Berbice.

According to initial investigations, Abrams, three friends and the suspect were consuming alcohol at a bar in the 14 Miles Backdam area when an altercation broke out between Abrams and the suspect.

Police said one of the men intervened and separated the two. During that time, he reportedly noticed what appeared to be bloodstains on Abrams’ vest.

The suspect allegedly ran from the shop, while Abrams walked a short distance before collapsing.

Detectives later visited and processed the scene, where Abrams’ motionless body was found on the ground in front of the counter.

Police said the area was canvassed for CCTV cameras and witnesses. No CCTV cameras were found, but statements were taken.

Checks have since been conducted at several camps in the 14 Miles Backdam area for the suspect, but he has not yet been located.

Police said efforts are ongoing to find and arrest him as investigations continue.
