A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldier was injured on Monday after a military boat patrol came under fire along the country’s western border in Region Seven.
In a statement, the Force said the incident occurred at about 11:30 hrs while a GDF boat patrol was escorting three civilian boats carrying personnel and cargo from Makapa to Eteringbang in the vicinity of Black Water. During the operation, the convoy reportedly came under gunfire, prompting the patrol to return fire and manoeuvre the boats out of the area.
The GDF said one rank sustained two gunshot wounds to his right leg and was immediately given medical attention. The injured soldier was being medically evacuated to Georgetown for further treatment.
The Force said it continues to maintain an active operational presence along the western border and remains committed to protecting its personnel and safeguarding Guyana’s territorial integrity.
