Roof collapses at Atlantic Gardens construction site, carpenter killed and seven injured

A 46-year-old carpenter lost his life, and seven other construction workers were injured on Wednesday evening when a structure under construction collapsed at Atlantic Gardens, East Coast Demerara.

Dead is Radish Domingo of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the incident occurred at about 7:10 p.m. while the men were working on a two-storey concrete building at the property.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the workers were in the process of completing work in the roof area when the structure suddenly gave way, leaving them trapped and injured.

Police and the Guyana Fire Service were summoned to the scene, and emergency responders assisted in getting the injured men to the Georgetown Public Hospital and Sheriff Medical Hospital for treatment.

Domingo was found pinned beneath the debris. He was later removed from the collapsed structure and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.

Police said his body was later identified by a female relative before being taken to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Investigators also observed CCTV cameras in the area, and the footage is expected to be reviewed as part of the ongoing probe. Police investigations are continuing.
