Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips has strongly rejected claims that Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed is ahead of the Government’s search and rescue operations following the MV Barima tragedy.
In a statement on Tuesday, Phillips said the resurfacing of some victims’ bodies was anticipated by search and rescue experts from the beginning of the operation, and should not be credited to social media activity or political promotion.
“Let us be clear: Azzrudin is not ahead of the Government’s search and rescue operations,” the Prime Minister said.
Phillips said the heartbreaking reality is that, over time, some bodies would resurface, and this was part of what experts had planned for during the response.
“This is not the result of social media posts or publicity stunts,” he stated.
The Prime Minister also condemned what he described as attempts to exploit the tragedy for attention, especially the circulation of graphic images of the deceased.
“What is truly reprehensible is exploiting this national tragedy for clicks, likes, and political attention,” Phillips said.
He added that the posting and sharing of graphic images is deeply insensitive and causes more pain to families already grieving the loss of loved ones.
“Such actions are deeply insensitive, inflict further pain on grieving families, and strip victims of the dignity they deserve,” the Prime Minister said.
Phillips urged the public to act with compassion and restraint as search and recovery efforts continue.
He said the moment calls for respect and responsible conduct, not self-promotion.
“This is a time for compassion, respect, and responsible conduct—not self-promotion,” he said.
The Prime Minister called on persons to allow professionals to continue their work and give families the privacy and dignity they deserve as they mourn their loved ones.
