Police are investigating the discovery of a firearm that fell onto a Georgetown roadway after a motorcyclist allegedly breached a one-way street, crashed while trying to evade a police rank, and then escaped.

According to police, the incident occurred at about 7:15 p.m. on Friday at Bourda, Georgetown.

Investigators said a rank attached to the Bourda Market Police Outpost was standing in front of the outpost when he noticed an identifiable man riding a motorcycle with an unknown registration number.

Police said the rider proceeded north along Orange Walk, breaching the one-way system, prompting the rank to try to stop him.

During the attempt to escape, the motorcyclist allegedly slammed into a motor car and a nearby barrier, causing him to lose control of the bike. It was during that moment, police said, that a suspected firearm fell from his person onto the roadway.

Despite the crash, the rider reportedly regained control and sped away further north along Orange Walk. The weapon was recovered from the road and was identified as a black and silver 9mm Girsan pistol containing four matching rounds of ammunition.

Police said the firearm was later taken to the Criminal Investigation Department, where it was lodged as investigations continue. The suspect remains at large.
