Drunken row turns deadly at Soesdyke; suspect on the run

A 28-year-old construction worker was stabbed to death late Saturday night at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara (EBD), following an argument during a drinking session.

Dead is Curtis Bengochea of Eight Street, Ivan Road, Soesdyke. Police said the killing occurred at about 10:30 p.m. at First Street, Ivan Road, and involved a suspect known to the victim.

According to preliminary investigations, Bengochea and the suspect were imbibing with other persons when an argument broke out. During the confrontation, police said the suspect allegedly armed himself with a knife and attacked Bengochea.

The altercation reportedly spilled into a nearby drain, where the two men continued scuffling before they were eventually separated by persons at the scene.

Shortly after, Bengochea was pulled from the drain, and a wound was seen on the left side of his ribs.Police said the suspect then fled the area on foot.

The injured man was taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.

His body has since been taken to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. The suspect remains at large as police continue their investigations.
