The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) is warning contractors to stop burning construction waste at project sites, saying breaches could result in fines, imprisonment and contractual penalties.
In a public advisory, CH&PA reminded contractors that the open burning of vegetation, construction waste and other materials is strictly prohibited at all project sites.
The agency said contractors must immediately cease and desist from all open burning and extinguish any existing fires.
The prohibited materials include vegetation from land-clearing and site-preparation works, discarded formwork and timber, construction debris, packaging materials and any other construction-related waste.
According to CH&PA, open and unregulated burning of waste is prohibited under the Environmental Protection Act, Cap. 20:05 of the Laws of Guyana.
The agency warned that contractors who breach the law may face fines, imprisonment and other applicable legal sanctions.
CH&PA said all construction waste must be regularly collected, removed and disposed of in keeping with the authority’s Waste Management Plan and the requirements of the relevant project contract.
The agency further warned that any contractor found in breach of the directive will be subject to contractual penalties enforced by CH&PA.
