Sigma Engineers Ltd Inc. has rejected allegations made by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed about the company’s operations in Guyana, saying the claims amount to “serious misrepresentations of the facts” and that it has engaged legal counsel.
In a statement issued on Monday, the company said it had taken note of statements made by Mohamed concerning Sigma and its work in Guyana.
In a video posted on his Team Mohamed page, the Opposition Leader alleged that Sigma Engineers was connected to Mohamed Aqtar Ali, the brother of President Dr. Irfaan Ali, and claimed the company received more than $12 billion in government contracts.
Mohamed further claimed that Sigma Engineers was incorporated on October 6, 2022, and alleged that within days, the company was awarded three government contracts valued at approximately $3.697 billion.
Sigma, however, has denied that it was established five days before receiving a government contract, stating that Sigma Engineers Ltd has been incorporated and operating in Bangladesh since 2003.
The company confirmed that Sigma Engineers Ltd Inc. was registered in Guyana on October 6, 2022, but said its first contract in Guyana was awarded in 2026 following a national competitive bidding process conducted through the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board.
In his video, Mohamed also alleged that Mohamed Aqtar Ali was connected to Sigma and that the company was being “fronted” for him by another individual.
Sigma said Mohamed Aqtar Ali has been engaged by Sigma Engineers Ltd Inc. in Guyana in a senior technical consultant capacity, but stated that he has no affiliation with the company in Bangladesh.
The company said it remains committed to conducting its operations in keeping with Guyana’s laws and regulations, while maintaining professionalism, accountability and integrity.
Sigma also said public discussion about businesses operating in Guyana should be based on accurate and verifiable information.
The Opposition Leader, in his remarks, called on the Special Organised Crime Unit and the Financial Intelligence Unit to investigate the company’s contracts, the procurement process and the flow of money.
Sigma said it is continuing to engage its legal counsel and will provide further information on its operations and the issues raised at the appropriate time.
