A Georgetown businessman has been remanded to prison after he was charged in connection with an attempted armed robbery at the home of a senior Central Housing and Planning Authority official at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
Naipaul Basdeoram, 36, of David Street, Kitty, Georgetown, was charged with attempt to commit a felony, namely robbery under arms, contrary to Section 36 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act.
Police said Basdeoram was arrested on Saturday, August 29, 2026, in relation to the alleged offence.
He appeared on Friday, before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, where the indictable charge was read to him.
Basdeoram was not required to plead and was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to October 9, 2026.
The charge stems from an alleged attempted robbery under arms, which occurred at about 06:48hrs on August 28, 2026, at Tuschen New Housing Scheme.
The victim is a 42-year-old Director of Projects at the Central Housing and Planning Authority.
According to police, preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was at home when he exited through the western door to dispose of garbage. He later returned inside, secured the door and went to his bedroom, where he checked his security cameras.
Police said the victim reportedly saw four masked men entering his yard and approaching the western door. The men allegedly attempted to open the door, prompting the victim to immediately contact police.
Acting on information received, ranks later intercepted three men at Fisher Dam, Zeelugt.
The three suspects were identified as a 23-year-old labourer of Tucville, Georgetown; a 22-year-old labourer, also of Tucville; and a 22-year-old security guard of Cane View Squatting Area, Georgetown.
Police said searches were conducted on the suspects, during which a black suspected firearm with three matching rounds of ammunition was found in a haversack worn by one of them.
He was told of the allegation, cautioned and arrested. A further search of the other suspects allegedly uncovered another suspected firearm with three matching rounds of ammunition concealed on the 23-year-old man.
He was also told of the allegation, cautioned and arrested. The suspected firearms and ammunition were taken to the Leonora Police Station, where they were marked, sealed and lodged.
Police said the scene was revisited and several CCTV cameras were observed in the area.
