The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) says 43 illegal electricity connections were removed from Enmore, East Coast Demerara (ECD), during a loss-reduction exercise conducted on Friday.
The operation was carried out by GPL’s Loss Reduction Department in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
According to the utility company, teams inspected four pole spans at Enmore and identified 43 illegal connections linked to nine sources. The connections were subsequently removed.
A similar exercise was conducted at Vigilance North, where teams covered nine pole spans and removed another 18 illegal connections from six sources.
In total, GPL said 61 illegal electricity connections were removed from the two East Coast Demerara communities.
The company warned that unauthorised connections can place additional strain on the electricity network, damage infrastructure and contribute to service interruptions.
GPL also cautioned that illegal connections create serious safety hazards, including the risk of electrocution and electrical fires.
The company said loss-reduction exercises will continue in communities across the country as part of efforts to tackle electricity theft and improve the safety and reliability of the power network.
GPL reminded customers that electricity theft is both illegal and dangerous.
