A boat travelling from Bartica to Parika began taking in water after its bow was reportedly damaged in rough conditions on Friday morning, prompting the captain to bring the vessel ashore.
No injuries or deaths were reported, according to the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
The incident occurred between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. approximately 1,000 metres southwest of the Parika Stelling.
Police said the vessel, captained by a 52-year-old Bartica resident, had departed the Bartica Stelling with 30 persons, including the bowman, bound for Parika.
According to the captain’s account to investigators, the boat encountered rough waters as it approached the area. The conditions reportedly damaged the bow, allowing water to enter.
The captain subsequently brought the vessel ashore along the eastern riverbank.
Police ranks visited the location and interviewed the captain, bowman and passengers as part of their enquiries.
Investigations are continuing.
