A 39-year-old man was shot dead Saturday afternoon following an altercation with a security officer at a supermarket along the Beterverwagting Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
The dead man has been identified as Kevon Benjamin of La Bonne Intention. Police said the incident occurred at about 17:45hrs.
According to preliminary investigations, Benjamin and a 46-year-old security officer became involved in an altercation during which a firearm was allegedly discharged.
Benjamin sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen and was rushed to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he received emergency treatment.
He later succumbed to his injuries while being treated. Police subsequently took the 46-year-old security officer into custody.
A 9mm Beretta firearm, along with a magazine containing 16 matching rounds of ammunition, was recovered and lodged as part of the investigation.
Benjamin’s body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination. Police continue to investigate.
