Police are investigating an alleged armed robbery at a hardware store in La Grange, West Bank Demerara (WBD), where five masked men reportedly stole about $23 million in cash.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the robbery occurred at about 18:20hrs on Friday, at a hardware store on the Public Road, La Grange.
According to police, a 29-year-old Chinese national and businessman reported that five masked men entered the premises. Four of the suspects were allegedly armed with what appeared to be firearms.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspects gained entry by climbing over the southern fence from the direction of the Demerara River.
Police said the men then allegedly entered the building, held three Chinese nationals hostage and removed the cash, which was reportedly being kept under a bed.
The suspects reportedly escaped through the southern section of a back fence. Police said CCTV footage was reviewed and several persons were questioned as part of the probe. Investigations are ongoing.
