Police are investigating an armed robbery that left a 46-year-old welder relieved of a gold chain worth half a million dollars on Saturday evening at Nelson Mandela Avenue and Hibiscus Street, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown.

According to police in Regional Division 4 ‘A’, the robbery occurred at about 6:02 p.m. while the man, of Plantation Farm, East Bank Demerara, was standing in front of a shop.

Preliminary investigations indicate that two suspects arrived on a black Honda XR motorcycle from a northern direction.

Police said the pillion rider got off the motorcycle and grabbed the yellow metal chain from around the victim’s neck, triggering a struggle between the two.

During the scuffle, the suspect allegedly discharged two rounds into the air before snatching the chain and jumping back onto the waiting motorcycle.

The men then made good their escape in an eastern direction along Nelson Mandela Avenue.

Investigators processed the scene and recovered two 9mm spent shells, which have since been lodged.

Police also noted that CCTV cameras were seen in the area and are expected to be reviewed as part of the probe.

No arrests have been made so far. Investigations are ongoing.
