A 20-year-old man of Surama Village, North Rupununi, is in police custody after ranks allegedly found a quantity of cannabis in a bag he was carrying during an operation on Saturday evening.
According to police in Regional Division Nine, the discovery was made at about 7:00 p.m. during an exercise at Surama Village.
Investigators said ranks, acting on information received, contacted the suspect and carried out a search on his person and a side bag he had with him.
During the search, police reportedly found 17 transparent zip-lock plastic bags containing seeds, leaves and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The man was arrested and taken to the Annai Police Station along with the suspected narcotics.
Police said the substance was weighed in the suspect’s presence and amounted to 34 grams before being lodged.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
