Two men are in custody after police on patrol at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara (ECD), uncovered a 9mm pistol and ammunition hidden under a tarpaulin near a business place on Saturday evening.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the discovery was made at about 6:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Granville Park, Beterverwagting Public Road.
According to investigators, the ranks were on patrol when they stopped motorcycle CR 439, which was being driven by a 30-year-old man from the Sparendaam Squatting Area.
Police said his documents were checked and found to be in order, after which a search was conducted on his person. During the interaction, the suspect reportedly told police that he was a security officer attached to a business place in Beterverwagting and that a firearm was with a colleague at the workplace.
Ranks then escorted the man to the location, where a second suspect, a 34-year-old security officer, was contacted.
Police said the second man went to a fenced area in front of the business place and retrieved a 9mm Taurus pistol with 10 live rounds in the magazine. The weapon had allegedly been hidden between pieces of lumber and covered with a tarpaulin.
The men were asked to produce their precepts, but reportedly told police they did not have them in their possession. Both suspects were then arrested.
Police said no firearm licence for the weapon had been produced up to the time of the report. The two men were taken to the Beterverwagting Police Station along with the firearm and ammunition, which were lodged as investigations continue.
Both suspects remain in custody assisting with the probe.
