ERC seeks public input on constitutional safeguards against discrimination

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) is inviting citizens to help shape recommendations on equality, ethnic security and protection from discrimination at a national consultation on constitutional reform next Tuesday.

The October 13 consultation will be held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Liliendaal, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is open to the public.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ERC said the discussions will focus on constitutional matters affecting ethnic relations, inclusion and the effectiveness of institutions tasked with supporting those objectives.

Participants will work in 11 groups—10 constituency groups and one public participation group—to develop recommendations on issues relevant to the Commission’s mandate.

The ERC will compile those recommendations into a report for submission to the Constitutional Reform Commission before its December 31, 2026 deadline.

The consultation will also feature a brief introduction to the ERC’s Draft Glossary of Ethnically Sensitive Terms. The Commission described the document as a public education resource aimed at improving understanding of language relating to ethnicity and how it can affect social relations.

Participants will be able to provide feedback on the draft glossary at a later date as part of the wider consultation process.

“Citizens are encouraged to participate based on their experiences, perspectives and ideas for strengthening equality, inclusion and harmonious relations in Guyana,” the ERC stated.

The Commission is encouraging community organisations, civil society groups and other stakeholders to attend, saying the exercise will allow them to contribute directly to discussions relevant to its constitutional responsibilities.

Interested persons can register through a link available on the ERC’s social media pages, @ERCGuyana, where further information about the event is also available.
