Region Seven is set to benefit from approximately $5.6 billion in investments this year, with major projects planned to improve healthcare, education, water access, infrastructure, and tourism, according to Regional Executive Officer (REO) Dr. Josh Kanhai.
Appearing on the Starting Point podcast, Dr. Kanhai said the substantial allocation reflects the Government’s commitment to transforming the region and improving the quality of life for residents across its riverain, hinterland, and mining communities.
Among the key priorities is healthcare, with works already underway for the construction of a new Bartica Regional Hospital. Dr. Kanhai said piling has commenced at the project site, although recent rainfall has slowed some activities. The new facility is expected to significantly enhance healthcare delivery in the region.
He noted that Bartica Hospital has already expanded its services, with X-ray facilities now available locally, reducing the need for patients to travel to Georgetown for diagnostic testing. Specialist medical services have also been strengthened, allowing more patients to receive treatment within the region.
Plans are also advancing for a new hospital in the Upper Mazaruni, while dental services are being expanded through the installation of new equipment and facilities in remote communities. Telemedicine services are currently available throughout the region, allowing patients in hinterland villages to access consultations with specialists.
In education, the REO highlighted significant investments in schools, dormitories, and teacher accommodation, particularly in remote communities. New nursery schools and educational facilities have been established in previously underserved areas, while the Government’s hot meal programme continues to support students across the region.
Access to potable water remains another major focus. According to Dr. Kanhai, approximately 22 wells are scheduled to be drilled this year across the region as part of efforts to ensure reliable water supplies for residents.
The REO also outlined plans to boost tourism in Bartica through the revival of Bartica Regatta Week and the reintroduction of several community events, including heritage activities, water sports, motocross and other attractions designed to showcase the region’s natural beauty and stimulate economic activity.
“We’re serious about Region Seven,” Dr. Kanhai said while noting that the region received a similar level of investment last year. He added that efforts are being made to ensure communities benefit directly from ongoing development initiatives and improved public services.
The REO said his administration will also place strong emphasis on accountability, community involvement, and monitoring of projects to ensure taxpayers receive value for money from the billions being invested in the region.
