WIN, APNU issue statement following Monday’s meeting

Read below the joint statement issued by the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU):

𝐉𝐎𝐈𝐍𝐓 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓: 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐄𝐑 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐎𝐏𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐋𝐄𝐃 𝐀 𝐖𝐈𝐍 𝐓𝐄𝐀𝐌 𝐓𝐎 𝐌𝐄𝐄𝐓 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐀𝐏𝐍𝐔

The Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Azruddin Mohamed, led a delegation from We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) to meet with a delegation from the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on Monday 24th August, to discuss matters of mutual concern and the prospects for greater political cooperation in the interest of the people of Guyana.

The WIN delegation comprised the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Azruddin Mohamed, MP; Ms. Odessa Primus, MP, General Secretary of WIN; Ms. Tabitha Sarabo-Halley, MP; Ms. Natasha Singh, MP; Mr. Duarte Hetsberger, MP; and Mr. Vishnu Panday, MP.

The APNU delegation comprised the Chairman of APNU and Leader of the PNCR Mr. Aubrey Norton; Mr. Sherwin Benjamin, General Secretary of the PNCR; Dr. David Hinds, MP; Mr. Ganesh Mahipaul, MP; Ms. Coretta McDonald, MP; Dr. Dexter Todd, MP; Mr. Ronald Daniels; and Ms. Shaneika Haynes.

The genesis of the meeting was the matters in letters being traded between the parties: –

1. matters relating to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), including the appointment of Commissioners and the issue of electoral scrutineers;
2. the ongoing impasse affecting the functioning of the Region 10 Regional Democratic Council; and
3. the nominations to the Local Government Commission

The meeting was cordial and provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on developing general and specific guidelines to govern the engagement between the parties.

The parties committed that, in the case of WIN, they will hold consultations with their leadership/membership before they decide whether they would agree to name a three-member team to work along with a three-member team from APNU to develop the general and specific guidelines to govern their engagement with APNU, and, in APNU’s case, it will consult with other parties in its coalition to select a three-member team.

No final decisions were taken on the substantive matters discussed at the meeting.
