A 38-year-old cane harvester was on Tuesday granted $250,000 bail after appearing before the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court on an indictable rape charge.
Lookesh Daljit, also known as “Willy,” of Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, Region Five, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias. It is alleged that on June 11, Daljit sexually penetrated a woman without her consent while in Region Five.
Because the charge is indictable, Daljit was not required to plead when it was read to him in court.
During the hearing, the prosecution informed the court that investigations into the matter had been completed and that the State was prepared to proceed. No objection to bail was raised by the prosecution.
Magistrate Matthias subsequently granted Daljit bail in the sum of $250,000.
As part of his bail conditions, the court ordered that he remain at least 50 feet away from the virtual complainant. The magistrate cautioned that any breach of that order could result in bail being revoked and Daljit being remanded to custody until the matter is concluded.
He was also instructed to attend all future court hearings. The case was adjourned to June 29.
Reports are that the alleged incident took place at the woman’s home in Berbice. The woman reportedly told investigators that she had been asleep when she awoke and found Daljit inside her room.
The matter was later reported to the police, triggering an investigation that led to Daljit’s arrest and subsequent charge.
