A sand truck was set ablaze, and firefighters were pelted with debris as burning barricades blocked access points in the Vigilance-Buxton area, East Coast Demerara (ECD), on Tuesday afternoon.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said ranks were heading to a location at Vigilance around 4:40 p.m. in connection with an ongoing investigation when they encountered several persons blocking access with burning tyres, wood and other debris.
The Guyana Fire Service was called to the scene, but persons in the area allegedly hurled debris at firefighters and continued feeding the fires with combustible materials.
During the incident, police received a report that a sand truck along the Railway Embankment at Buxton had been set on fire. Responding ranks found extensive fire damage to the vehicle’s front cabin. Firefighters subsequently extinguished the blaze.
Police also received information that several loud explosions, suspected to be gunshots, were heard shortly before the truck was seen on fire. The Force has not confirmed whether gunshots were discharged.
Investigators have identified CCTV cameras in the surrounding area and plan to review the footage as part of their enquiries.
No arrests have been made. Police patrols remain in the area as investigations continue.
