Strong winds ripped through Arau in Region Seven, damaging several homes and triggering a multi-agency emergency response by the Civil Defence Commission (CDC).
The CDC said it is coordinating a multi-sectoral response after reports of severe weather affecting the community on Wednesday.
According to preliminary information provided by the Village Toshao, 15 houses have so far been reported damaged. The CDC said the damage mainly affected roofs and other sections of residential structures.
However, the Commission noted that the figures remain preliminary and are subject to verification as assessments continue.
An ongoing damage assessment is being carried out to determine the full extent of the impact on households and community infrastructure. The response is being coordinated by the CDC with support from the Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Police Force, Regional Democratic Council and Arau Village leaders.
The Guyana Defence Force has already mobilised personnel and resources to assist with the response, while local and regional officials continue to provide updates from the affected community.
The CDC said the coordinated assessment will help determine the priority needs of residents and whether additional resources will be required.
As an immediate measure, the Commission will send an initial quantity of emergency shelter materials to assist households whose homes were affected. Additional relief supplies and support may also be provided depending on the findings of the ongoing assessment.
The CDC said it is also prepared to establish emergency shelter arrangements if needed.
