Police are investigating a fatal accident at Haslington, East Coast Demerara (ECD), after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a reversing motor lorry that was reportedly engaged in road paving works.
Dead is Shawn Gittens, a 54-year-old unemployed resident of Golden Grove. The accident occurred at approximately 17:20 hrs on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, along the Haslington Railway Embankment Road.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the accident involved a motor lorry owned by China Railway Construction and driven by a 36-year-old Chinese national of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the lorry was engaged in paving works on the southern carriageway and was reversing when Gittens reportedly walked behind the vehicle and was struck.
Emergency Medical Technicians responded to the scene, where Gittens was examined and pronounced dead by a doctor from the Georgetown Public Hospital.
His body was later taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said a Notice of Intended Prosecution was served on the driver, who remains in custody assisting with the ongoing investigation.
