A police patrol in Sophia on Tuesday ended with the discovery of a firearm and ammunition after ranks chased down a car whose driver reportedly refused to stop.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the incident occurred at about 5:45 p.m. on Red Road, Sophia, during an operation in Regional Division 4 ‘A’.
Police said ranks were on mobile patrol duty when they observed a white Toyota Allion travelling in the opposite direction. The driver, police said, was acting suspiciously and was signalled to stop, but he allegedly refused, prompting ranks to give chase.
The vehicle was eventually intercepted further north along Red Road. Police identified the driver as a 32-year-old vendor of D Field, Sophia. A female passenger was also in the car at the time.
The driver was arrested and taken, along with the vehicle, to the Turkeyen Police Station, where the car was searched in his presence. During the search, police said they found a black ski mask containing a silver and black .380 Lorcin pistol along with seven rounds of .380 ammunition.
The female passenger, a 40-year-old waitress of Durban Street, Lodge, reportedly left the scene as a crowd began to gather, but was later contacted and arrested.
The firearm and ammunition were lodged, and both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
