Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and Police Constable Ryan Greene were remanded to prison on Friday after Magistrate Abigail Gibbs refused them bail in a case involving the alleged unauthorised release of police surveillance footage.
The two appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where their attorneys and the prosecution presented arguments on bail. They are scheduled to return to court on November 24.
Mohamed was represented by attorneys Roysdale Forde and Siand Dhurjon, while Dexter Todd and Darren Wade appeared for Greene. King’s Counsel Darshan Ramdhani led the prosecution.
The case concerns allegations that Greene, 20, downloaded a recording from the Guyana Police Force’s Safe City surveillance system and allegedly handed it to Mohamed in exchange for $800,000.
The footage relates to the October 12 shooting incident outside the Barr Street, Kitty, residence of Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, head of the Force’s Special Branch Unit.
Narine is a witness in the ongoing extradition proceedings against Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed.
In explaining her decision, Magistrate Gibbs considered Mohamed’s other ongoing legal matters, including the extradition proceedings and charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and attempting to obstruct the course of justice.
Mohamed had previously been granted bail on those charges. The magistrate expressed concern that the defendants were likely to commit another offence if released and refused bail to both men.
