Police are investigating a river mishap that left eight persons injured, including several children, after two boats collided in the vicinity of Pat Walla, Canje Creek, Berbice.
The incident occurred at about 14:30hrs on Tuesday, and involved an unregistered boat and a private boat transporting a Government medical outreach team.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), initial enquiries revealed that the private boat, captained by a 35-year-old man of Kimba, left Barakara at about 13:00hrs with eight medical personnel on board.
While proceeding in the vicinity of Pat Walla, the vessel reportedly collided head-on with an unregistered boat powered by a 40 HP Yamaha outboard engine.
Police said the unregistered boat was captained by a 38-year-old security guard of Barakara Creek, Berbice River, and was transporting eight passengers, including several children, to Barakara Village.
As a result of the collision, eight persons, including the captain of the unregistered boat, sustained injuries.
They were taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where they were examined by a doctor on duty.
The captain of the unregistered boat was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further medical treatment. The seven other injured passengers remain at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital for observation.
Police said investigations are ongoing.
