Contractor sent to trial over rape of girl, 12

A contractor from Number 51 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, has been committed to stand trial in the Berbice High Court over the rape of a 12-year-old girl.

The accused, Dexter Philadelphia, also known as “Dexter Clarke,” appeared before Justice Deborah Kumar, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The court heard that the alleged offence occurred on August 6, 2016, in Region Six.

State Prosecutor Marisa Edwards told the court she intends to call seven witnesses during the trial, including three police officers, a doctor, and three other witnesses.

Following the hearing, a 12-member jury was empanelled, clearing the way for the trial to begin on February 9, 2026.
