A 76-year-old contractor was killed Thursday afternoon after he was struck and run over by a reversing truck at an industrial site in Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
The dead man has been identified as Gobin Persaud of Dasrath Street, Triumph, East Coast Demerara (ECD). The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the fatal industrial incident occurred at about 14:45hrs.
According to preliminary investigations, Persaud was walking through the compound when he reportedly walked behind motor truck GPP 6272, which was reversing at the time.
Police said the truck struck Persaud, causing him to fall, after which the vehicle’s rear wheels ran over him. An alarm was raised, and the truck came to a stop.
Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned to the scene, where Persaud was examined by a doctor and pronounced dead. His body was subsequently taken to a funeral home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The 22-year-old truck driver, who is from Little Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD), is assisting police with the ongoing investigation.
