A shotgun is among several items stolen from the home of a 79-year-old gold miner at Silver Hill, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, in a break-in that has led to the detention of a 13-year-old boy, police said.
The theft reportedly occurred between October 22 and 25, while the miner was away in Linden.
According to preliminary investigations, the man secured his house before leaving. When he returned, he found a window open and discovered that several belongings were missing.
These included a 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun, a laptop, six handheld radios and a digital scale. Police said the firearm had been stored in a metal safety box inside the house.
After receiving the report, investigators visited the property and subsequently acted on information that took them to the Silver Hill Health Centre area, where they contacted the teenager.
Information obtained during the investigation led to the recovery of three handheld radios without batteries, two chargers and a digital scale. The items were retained as evidence.
The boy was escorted to the Timehri Police Station. Police said his case is being handled in accordance with the Juvenile Justice Act, 2018.
Investigators are continuing efforts to recover the shotgun and other missing items and locate additional suspects.
