Prime Minister Mark Phillips will outline Guyana’s plans for a more affordable and reliable electricity supply when regional energy leaders meet in the Dominican Republic this week.

Phillips will represent Guyana at the 56th Meeting of Ministers of the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization, scheduled for October 8–9 in Santo Domingo. Guyana Energy Agency Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mahender Sharma will accompany him.

The meeting forms part of the 11th Energy Week and will bring together regional energy officials, development partners and international organisations for discussions on energy security, investment, technological innovation and cooperation.

According to a statement announcing his participation, Phillips is expected to present Guyana’s priorities for diversifying its energy supply under the Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030.

Those priorities include developing natural gas and renewable energy, modernising the electricity grid, introducing battery storage, improving energy efficiency and advancing electric mobility.

Guyana will also highlight efforts to extend electricity access to hinterland, riverine and Indigenous communities, where improved supply can support schools, healthcare facilities and local businesses.

The ministerial dialogue will take place under the theme, “The strategic role of Latin America and the Caribbean in the new global energy order.”

Discussions will examine how countries can use their energy resources to attract investment, improve competitiveness and support sustainable development. Resilient infrastructure and stronger regional integration are also on the agenda.

Artificial intelligence and digitalisation will feature in the talks, particularly their implications for electricity demand and energy planning.

Ministers are scheduled to consider draft decisions covering artificial intelligence and energy, the electrification of energy demand, circular economy practices in the sector and the establishment of a Regional Council of Youth in Energy.

The statement said Guyana’s participation will reaffirm its commitment to regional cooperation and an energy transition that benefits households, businesses and communities.
