A 14-year-old student has surrendered to police in connection with the fatal motorcycle collision that claimed the life of 10-year-old Gabriela Rodrigues along Independence Boulevard on Saturday.
The teenager reportedly turned himself in at the Ruimveldt Police Station on Monday morning, accompanied by his parents and an attorney.
A police file has since been prepared and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
Rodrigues, a Ketley Primary School pupil from James Street, Albouystown, was reportedly walking home from church when she was struck by a motorcycle along Independence Boulevard.
Her sister, Jennifer Bernard, alleged that the teenage rider was performing a wheelie when he lost control of the motorcycle and struck Rodrigues, who was walking along the pedestrian path at the time.
The impact reportedly threw the child some distance and left her with severe injuries, including head trauma, internal injuries and a punctured lung.
Rodrigues was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Bernard further alleged that the rider removed the motorcycle’s key before leaving the scene following the collision. Police subsequently took possession of the motorcycle.
