The Guyana Power and Light Inc. says it will take legal action against a driver after a Sunday crash at Annandale, East Coast Demerara (ECD), caused major damage to the company’s electricity network.
The company said the driver, Trevon Cockfield, was operating motor car PAE 3137 when the vehicle came into contact with GPL’s network. The accident reportedly damaged a utility pole and other related network components.
GPL said Cockfield was later arrested by ranks from the Vigilance Police Station.
The power company said it intends to pursue the matter through the appropriate legal channels to recover the cost of repairing and replacing the damaged infrastructure.
GPL said it remains concerned about the number of vehicular accidents involving its electricity infrastructure.
According to the company, such incidents can cause serious damage to critical network assets, lead to high repair costs and create safety risks for motorists and members of the public.
GPL is urging drivers to exercise greater caution on the roadways, especially in areas where electricity poles and other power infrastructure are located.
The company said it remains committed to protecting its network and will continue to pursue legal action, including cost recovery, in cases where its infrastructure is damaged.
