A 21-year-old Yarrowkabra motorcyclist was killed Wednesday night after a van allegedly turned into a worksite compound along the Coverden Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and collided with his motorcycle.
Dead is Christopher Thomas, of Yarrowkabra Village, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Police said the fatal accident occurred around 21:10 hrs on Wednesday on the Coverden Public Road. It involved motor van PAG 8745, driven by a 39-year-old Chinese national of Kuru Kururu Village, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, and motorcycle CR 8010, which was being driven by Thomas.
A 24-year-old man of Grand Sand Road, Soesdyke, was the pillion rider on the motorcycle.
Reports indicated that the van was traveling northbound in the western lane of the Coverden Public Road. Upon approaching the entrance to a worksite compound, the driver allegedly turned right into the compound without stopping.
Police said that in the process, the van collided with the motorcycle, which was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane at an alleged fast rate of speed.
As a result of the collision, Thomas and the pillion rider were flung onto the roadway and sustained injuries about their bodies.
They were taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where Thomas was pronounced dead while receiving medical treatment.
The pillion rider remains a patient at the hospital receiving medical attention. Police said CCTV cameras were seen in the area and will be reviewed as part of the investigation.
A breathalyser test conducted on the driver of the van returned a reading of 0.07 micrograms, which police said is below the prescribed legal limit.
The driver remains in police custody assisting with investigations. Investigations are ongoing.
