A West Coast Berbice man has died after police say he attempted to overtake a line of traffic at a fast rate of speed and slammed head-on into another car along the No. 22 Public Road.
Dead is Carlton Pluck, 42, of No. 8 Village, West Coast Berbice. Police said the crash occurred around 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026, and involved motorcars PJJ 94 and PAP 2877.
According to preliminary investigations, Pluck was driving motorcar PJJ 94 east along the northern driving lane when, while negotiating a right bend, he allegedly attempted to overtake a line of traffic.
Police said his vehicle collided head-on with motorcar PAP 2877, which was proceeding west along the southern driving lane.
The second vehicle was being driven by Andre Stephen, 33, of Bermine Scheme, New Amsterdam. Also in that vehicle were Sean Cobagan, 37, of Glasgow Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam, and Delon Codogan, 33, also of New Amsterdam.
Both vehicles were extensively damaged in the collision, and the drivers and occupants of PAP 2877 suffered injuries.
Pluck was first taken to the Bath Regional Hospital before being transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he remained unconscious while being treated for severe head injuries.
He succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, around 4:30 p.m.
Stephen was taken to the Bath Regional Hospital by public-spirited citizens, where he was treated and discharged. Cobagan was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for further medical attention, while Codogan, who sustained multiple injuries, remained under observation.
Their conditions are listed as stable. Police said a breathalyzer test conducted on Stephen recorded a reading of 17 micrograms. Pluck’s body is at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing.
