President Dr. Irfaan Ali says no effort will be spared in the ongoing rescue operation following the capsizing of the MV Barima, which issued a distress signal late Saturday night while travelling to Port Kaituma.
In a statement, the President said he is deeply distressed by the incident and remains in contact with Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips as the national response continues.
“I am deeply distressed by the capsizing of the MV Barima last evening. I am presently out of the jurisdiction but am in touch with the Prime Minister,” President Ali said.
The Head of State said the entire Cabinet is involved in the response to the incident, which has triggered a major search and rescue operation involving state and private assets.
“The entire Cabinet is engaged in the national response to this incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the passengers and crew and their families at this time,” he added.
The MV Barima reportedly departed on Saturday afternoon with passengers and crew bound for the North West District. A distress signal was received later that night, prompting emergency operations.
So far, 53 persons have been rescued as search and rescue teams continue efforts to locate others who were aboard the vessel.
President Ali said the safety of the passengers and crew remains the Government’s immediate priority.
“Their safety is now our immediate concern,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude to those involved in the rescue operation, noting that many responders have been working through the night.
“I extend my gratitude and support to all those involved in the rescue operations. Many of them have been working tirelessly since this incident happened and our nation stands with them as they undertake the rescue operations,” the President stated.
He assured that the Government will continue to use all available resources in the mission.
“No effort will be spared in this mission,” President Ali declared.
The President also urged Guyanese to remain united and to keep the passengers, crew, their families and rescuers in their thoughts and prayers.
“I ask all Guyanese to keep those aboard the MV Barima, their families, and every rescuer in their thoughts and prayers. Let us remain united in hope at this time,” he said.
